A Last Will and Testament is perhaps the most well known of the estate documents. Many people consider thinking about their will to be a morbid endeavor and wish to put it off until it is “necessary.” You should consider your will to be a necessity as of your reading this web page. Anything you own can be passed on after your death via a will. If you do not have a will all of your assets will be distributed according to New York State Intestacy law. A will is such a powerful instrument because it allows you to specify exactly who gets what after you die. Additionally, and very importantly, you can appoint a guardian for your children in your will. The Guardian will be their primary caretaker in the event of your death. You can even make provisions for pets in your will, should you so desire. When making out your will, you must follow the strict requirements of state law in order to ensure that your will is valid.
